Lindsay is a California Main Street City
Main Street Approach
Lindsay was named a California Main Street City in 1987. The Lindsay Chamber of Commerce
utilizes the Main Street approach as its scope of work guidelines. The program is designed
to foster community self-reliance in revitalizing the community. The approach endeavors to
emphasize the traditional assets of the business community. These assets include: personal
service, local ownership, unique characteristics and a sense of community. The approach has
four major components: organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.
- ORGANIZATION - Focuses on the process of enabling business and property owners, civic
groups, bankers, the chamber of commerce, government agencies and individual citizens
to work together to achieve common goals. The board of directors and a full-time director
are key elements in organization management.
- PROMOTION - Focuses on identifying the community as a unified commercial area, and an
attractive meeting place to stage a variety of community activities. Promotional programs
help to attract customers and investors to the city, strengthening its role as a vital
economic component of the community.
- DESIGN - Is essential in that it enhances the visual quality of the community, using basic
elements which already exist in the buildings throughout the city. Good design extends to
promotional, literature, commercial projects, merchandise display, signage and public
improvement.
- ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING - Helps the commercial community regain a share of the economic
market. The components involve business retention and recruitment, development of imaginative
marketing techniques, attracting new retail and commercial business, including office,
recreation and residential uses.
